Study of the residual and pre-harvest interval of some fungicides in controlling cucumber gray mold disease (Botrytis cinerea Pers) under greenhouse conditions

Abstract

Botrytis cinerea Pers. the causal agent of gray mold disease, affects various vegetables, ornamental plants, tubers, and fruits, including cucumber. Due to its genetic diversity, short life cycle, and high reproductive potential, it has a strong tendency to develop resistance to fungicides, making the control of gray mold very challenging. The use of effective fungicides is the most efficient method for managing this disease. To date, no fungicide has been registered specifically for the management of gray mold in cucumber in Iran. Therefore, currently, it is necessary to use fungicides registered for other crops. In this study, the residue of fungicide boscalid and pyraclostrobin in recommended dose (1.25 g/L) was investigated, aiming to evaluate both its disease control effectiveness and its residue on harvested fruits.
Residue analysis revealed that the levels detected were well below the national maximum residue limit (MRL) of 1 mg/kg for boscalid and 0.5 mg/kg for pyraclostrobin, suggesting that the application of Signum is safe for consumer health. Specifically, the results support a pre-harvest interval (PHI) of 1.3 days, so 3 days for PHI according to manufacturer's recommendations is acceptable.
The assessment of boscalid and pyraclostrobin residues was conducted by comparing the detected levels against national MRLs. This study underscores the importance of adhering to recommended application rates and intervals to ensure both effective disease management and consumer safety. Overall, the use Signum fungicide presents a viable option for cucumber growers facing challenges from damping off while maintaining food safety standards critical for public health.
