Yellow dwarf viruses (YDVs) are a group of viruses that cause serious yield losses in cereal crops. These viruses are reported in almost every grain-growing region around the world. All YDVs share common biological properties such as aphid transmission, and phloem limitation. However, the replication mechanism and genome organization of these viruses are different and based on these characteristics, these viruses are classified into two genera; Luteovirus, represented by Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), and Polerovirus represented by Cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV). This review covers the latest findings on these viruses, including reclassification and elimination of family Luteoviridae, genome organization, protein functions, and replication mechanisms, providing useful information for their management.
