The genus Paratylenchus (pin nematodes) comprises some of the smallest plant-parasitic nematodes and is distributed worldwide. Representatives of the genus are common in several agricultural and natural regions of Iran. Paratylenchus tateae had previously been reported from Iran on several occasions without supporting morphological, morphometric, or molecular evidence. Some studies had considered it synonymous with P. similis, but this species is now recognized as a valid taxon based on recent taxonomic evidence. In the present study, three populations of P. tateae were recovered from rhizosphere soil samples associated with fig and pea in Ramian and Azadshahr counties (Golestan province), and plum in Maragheh county (East Azarbaijan province). Females of the three recovered populations had a body length of 300-419 µm, lateral fields with four incisures, a trapezoidal lip region bearing inconspicuous submedian lobes, a stylet 15.5-19.0 µm long with well-developed basal knobs, an empty spermatheca, a short postvulval uterine sac, small lateral vulval flaps, and a conoid tail with a rounded terminus. Males were not recovered from any of the examined populations. Morphological comparisons with four known species, i.e., P. juglansi, P. similis, P. variabilis, and P. vexans, are presented. For molecular characterization, the D2-D3 expansion segments of the 28S rDNA were sequenced for two populations from Golestan province, and their phylogenetic relationships were inferred using Bayesian analysis. The obtained sequences clustered with available sequences of P. tateae, confirming the identity of the Iranian populations.
